Getting There

This walk was organised and led by me as an irregular CBC Tuesday walk:

(Tuesday 22 May - The Bog Hut (Oldfields) - M/R, X KHA report The Bog Hut at Colinton GR844415. Does it still exist in some form? Let’s find out. From the Brandy Flat South car park on the Boboyan Road, a bush bash all the way E and SE for around 4km and 400m climb. The return journey is around 8km and 550m total climb. Maps: Michelago and Colinton 1:25000. Limit of 8. Leader: John Evans – jevans@pcug.org.au, (h) 6288 7235; contact me by 6pm the previous Sunday to discuss options. Transport: ~$12. Further details at www.pcug.org.au/~jevans).

5 of us gathered and drove via Tharwa, the Naas Road, the Boboyan Road to the lookout near Hospital Hill, just a couple of km past the end of the bitumen. I'd changed the walk to start from here.

Walk

We exited the warm car to great views to a snow-dusted Mt Gudgenby and clouded Bimberi Wilderness peaks (Mt Kelly, Mt Burbidge and Mt Namadgi). Patches of sun scurried across the Gudgenby grasslands. The wind was chilly - the first really cool day of the season. But it proved a blessing, drying the bush from the previous night's rain so no coat was required. An extra mp3 stick gizmo today, as I wanted to make some on the spot recordings to try podcasting. I was quite relieved when one of our party members, Phil, said he'd been to the Bog Hut before, so we'd now know when we'd arrived.

Away by 8.50am, across the road and headed 10°M out onto a reasonable spur which would take us down to cross Dry Creek. Pretty open vegetation and easy walking. Kept that heading for around 800m, then a little more to the NE and down to Dry Creek. Crossed it at 9.20am with a little water in it.

All the spurs were heading up, so I chose one (not the one I'd intended!) and we started to climb. Sparse vegetation, so easy going. After a 300m climb the contours broadened. A little scree with wattle regrowth as we siddled the S side of the feature around the 1380 contour. Soon heading down and struck a drainage line with open creek flats which took us down towards our objective. By 10.40am we broke out onto the major flats. I headed towards a photographic line of fence posts (see pic 2) and Phil headed to the hut site about 100m away. Not much left of the Bog Hut (see pic 3). We found it at GR8449941734 (GDA94) Colinton 8726-3N 1:25000 (2nd edn).

We had a poke about and a lazy brunch. Quite pleasant in the sun, as the clouds coming in from the SW (where they looked threatening) were breaking up.

We left at 11.10am, heading 202°M up a gentle spur. The vegetation a little closer in patches, but still very easy walking. Trended S at the 1400m feature and across the top of a drainage line. 12 noon at this point.

Swinging W, we trundled down to Dry Creek through very open vegetation. Across the creek we headed back up to the road. Disturbed a large-ish wild dog. Hit the Boboyan Road 30m N of the car.

A pretty easy round through light and open vegetation.

Distance: 9.1km  Climb: 600m.  Time: 8.50am - 1.15pm (call it 4.5hrs), with 30mins of stops.
Grading: M/M-R,X; M(9)
