Getting There

This walk was organised and led by Jenny and Rob H as a CBC walk:

(Saturday 12 January: Billy Billy Rocks – M/R Smokers Gap- Bogong Cave- Billy Billy Rocks and return. Map: Corin Dam 1:25,000. Leaders: Jenny & Rob H Transport: ~$8.50).

8 of us drove to the Smokers Gap/Square Rock Walk car park. Very pleasant to be a passenger.

Walk

Our first objective was the little knoll to the NW of the car park. The leading legends commented that the regrowth is getting heavy through to Billy Billy Rocks - it was an easy wander immediately after the 2003 fires, but now is thick in places.

From there, we continued generally NW down through the top of Kangaroo Creek (running water amongst a little sphagnum), then up to the next knoll and around to its N side. Bogong Cave is there. We went in and Rob recounted its history to us.

Next, heading a little more N, down and across Billy Billy Creek (more running water) and up to the W end of Billy Billy Rocks. I'd head that the E end contains the access route to the top but, as it's a little more confused along there, Rob was aiming off so he could find the marker cairn (see pic 1). A cunning navigator. We sidled along to the E and found the first of two small cairns marking the way up at UTM 55H 672009-6069117 (GDA94). (Thanks to Mike B who pointed out that the original location published here was incorrect, when we went to Billy Billy Rocks again on 30 Jan 10.) The way then swings north and west as one hops, scrambles and jumps up the boulders to the top.

Wonderful views from the top boulder! Bimberi Wilderness peaks and features to the SW; to the W the knolls we top on the Fishing Gap to Smokers Gap crossover; to the NW, Fishing Gap and the Tidbinbilla Range heading N (see pics 2 and 3); the Brindabellas out the back to the W; and great views to the NE down into the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. It deserved an hours break. An eagle was chased over by a smaller bird.

Return via the same.

An excellent little walk with a great view, a perfect half day for a hot forecast. Not sure I'd be able to find the route to the top again but, no doubt, I'll try one day. Thanks R&J and fellow walkers.
