Getting There

This walk was organised and led by me as a walk with Parkway church friends:

(Walk 1: Booroomba Rocks 10am-12noon 3.5km on track and footpad, 200m total climb Drive to the Booroomba Rocks car park and follow a track up to the edge of fabulous granite cliffs from which rock climbers often dangle. Wonderful views over dry forest and hills. Spot parts of Canberra in the distance. Visit a couple of the high points. Return to cars. Optional additional 3.5km walk on track back to Honeysuckle Creek.
Walk 2: The Ridge of Stone 2-4pm 5km on footpad, 50m total climb Drive to the Orroral Ridge car park and follow a footpad along the ridge to several huge blocks of granite used by rock climbers. SE first to The Belfry, then back NE to the Trojan Wall, Sentinel Rocks and Legoland. A cool pause in the Opera House Cave. Huge views down to the Orroral Valley and across to the distant peaks of the Bimberi Wilderness.).

11 of us met at the Honeysuckle camping ground, with an extra 1 for the arvo walk.

Walk 1 - Booroomba Rocks

With a group of varying ages and walking abilities, plus a hot day, we chose to drive to the Booroomba Rocks car park. A stroll up the BR Walk, enjoying the granite and unfolding views. To the end of the track and up onto the cliff. Rock climbers below (see pic 1) and more setting up to dangle. Enormous views - Blue Gum Hill in front, the high point of BR to one side behind us (see pic 2). Three of us wandered further along the cliff top footpad to SH1353 where the view over Canberra was clearer and we could see back down to our companions (see pic 3).

The younger members of the party showed us their heels on the way back and continued back along the road towards Honeysuckle Creek. They'd nearly reached Apollo Road by the time we picked them up. Another couple wandered back along the AAWT to where we were enjoying lunch.

Thanks for your company Bernie, Jeff and Chris, Matthew, Paul and Fiona, Peter, Richard and Nicole and Stan.

Distance: 2.9km  Climb: 150m.  Time: 10.30am - 12.30pm (2hrs).

Walk 2 - Orroral Ridge

Only three brave souls drove to the collimation tower carpark on Orroral Ridge for the afternoon stroll. First SE to The Belfrey, with a pause on the way to look down onto Orroral Valley. Similar at The Belfrey where, after admiring the courage of the people who dangle from the anchor bolts clearly visible in the rock face, we again gazed over the valley with the bright green-reeded river at its centre.

Retracing our steps to the car, we then headed NW along the ridge, following the well-worn footpad to the Opera House Cave (see pic 4). We exited via the first crawl, then ran up the huge boulder face to the top, gaining wonderful views again (see pic 5). To our right, further along the ridge, we could see the Trojan Wall and the tops of Sentinal Rocks (see pic 6). We scrambled back down, then exited via the second crawl to the top of Legoland, then back to the footpad.

Further to the NW we had a look down from the top of the Trojan Wall, then walked to the bottom of Sentinel Rocks. About turn and back to the car.

Thanks for your company Bernie and Keith.
