Getting There

This walk was organised and enjoyed by me as a private walk:

Walk for Uganda Recce - Gungahlin; Lyneham Ridge Eucalypt Plantation; N Black Mountain. Part 1 - From Heritage Park Forde, walk the S side of Yerrabi Pond District Park, along Gundaroo Drive and S along Gungahlin Drive. Return. Part 2 - From Sandford St Mitchell, find a way to the Lyneham Ridge Eucalypt Plantation, through it and across Ginninderra Drive. Return. Part 3 - Checkout the N end of Black Mountain Nature Reserve towards the underpass under Caswell Drive. Return.

Walk

Part 1

A mild and overcast morning. Drove around Forde passing foxes and kangaroos in the street till I found Heritage Park (staring me in the face). Wore boots. Dark before 6am, but street lights. However, will need head-torch when starting at 4am and walking the unlit section beside Gungahlin Drive from Palmerston to Mitchell. Very pleasant along Yerrabi Pond with swans, ducks, coots and waterhens. Passed Thomas Gribble's Home (The Valley) just along from Burgmann Anglican School, but we won't see it in the dark on the day. The bike path is sure hard on the feet, but quick walking. So:

START - Heritage Park Francis Forde Boulevard Forde

Walk down Francis Forde Boulevard to the corner with Horse Park Drive. (CAREFULLY) cross Horse Park Drive and turn left onto the bike path for around 150m. Veer right and follow the bike path/walking track along the south side of Yerrabi Pond and through to the Gungahlin Town Park/Yerrabi Pond District Park. (CAREFULLY) cross Mirrabei Drive and follow the concrete path along the north side of Gundaroo Drive. (CAREFULLY) cross Nari St. Continue along the concrete path to the underpass under Gundaroo Drive near the intersection with Gungahlin Drive. Use it to go under Gundaroo Drive. (CAREFULLY) cross Gungahlin Drive at the traffic lights to the south corner of the intersection and turn left onto the bike path. Follow the bike path, (CAREFULLY) crossing Kosciuszko Avenue at the traffic lights, twice. Follow the bike path across the back of the houses of Palmerston and beside the Gungaderra Grasslands Nature Reserve to opposite Sandford St Mitchell.

9.3km, including 4.6km of the Walk for Uganda route.

I didn't go all the way to Mitchell, only to opposite the lit intersection with the street running in to Franklin. About turn and wander back to the car. Drive to Sandford St Mitchell. The Gungahlin Cemetery (gates open from 7.30am) won out over Norwood Park Crematorium as the place to park!

Part 2

Walked up to the gates onto the roundabout, crossed Sandford St to where the Walk for Uganda will go. So:

EXTRACT POINT - Sandford St Mitchell, around 100m east of the Sandford St/Gungahlin Drive T-intersection, at the entrances to Gungahlin Cemetery and Norwood Park Crematorium.

(CAREFULLY) cross Gungahlin Drive at the traffic lights to the south corner of the intersection. Follow the bike path along the side of the Crace Grasslands Nature Reserve, sweeping around the Gungahlin Drive/Barton Highway interchange, to the underpass under the Barton Highway. Use it to go under the Barton Highway. Veer right to the north side of Ellenborough St. (VERY CAREFULLY) cross Ellenborough St to the south side and pick up the bike path going west. Follow it around 200m to the fence line leading to the northern end of the Lyneham Ridge Eucalypt Plantation. Veer left up the fence line and cross the fence at the handy horizontal metal piping. Follow management trails south through the Lyneham Ridge Eucalypt Plantation, keeping within earshot of the GDE. (Here, up in the trees, could be the opportunity for a wee break.) At the dam, veer right-ish and follow the management trail to the corner of the plantation above the Ginninderra Drive/GDE interchange. Squeeze through the triangular posts especially there for walkers. (CAREFULLY) cross Ginninderra Drive at the traffic lights. Either hop the fence into the Bruce/O'Connor Ridge Nature Reserve and walk across the grassland corner to the walking track around 100m on, or go south on the right side of the fence between it and below the GDE for around 100m to the walkers entrance point and nearby sign post.

9.1km, including 4.2km of the Walk for Uganda route.

That's all I did, about turn and back to the car. Drove to Belconnen Way, E down to the Dryandra St roundabout, 180° and back up Belconnen Way going W to the car park at the N side of the Black Mountain Nature Reserve.

Part 3

EXTRACT POINT - car park off Belconnen Way going west, about 400m before the Belconnen Way/GDE intersection

From the carpark, cross the stile and go right along the Pipeline Trail. Turn right into Orchid Trail and follow it along under the powerlines to the point overlooking the GDE. Turn south and east along a short footpad to pick up the concrete walking track to the intersection.

2.1km, including 1.2km of the Walk for Uganda route.

That's all I did. Back to the car directly through the bush to pick up a footpad to the Orchid Trail.

Distance: 20.5km  Climb: 100m.  Time: 5.50 - 7.20am; 7.35 - 9.15am; 9.25 - 9.50am (3hrs 35mins) with no stops except to drive to the next start point.
Grading: L/E; M(8)
