Broom Clearing:

Saturday 14 November: Broom clearing 17th year at Cotter Hut. The club’s long-term environmental project aimed at removal of this invasive species from the Upper Cotter area will take place again this year. Each year club members go to the area around the Cotter Hut and locate and clear any new broom plants that can be found. The seeds of this species can stay in the soil for well over 20 years and each plant can produce thousands of seeds. Our contribution has involved searching the area to locate infestations, removal by lopping or digging and detailed mapping. You will have the opportunity to travel to the Upper Cotter by vehicle and spend the day in a remote part of Namadgi. No special skills needed. Map: Rendezvous Creek 1:25,000. Leader: John T, john@johnthwaite.com Transport: $12.

This walk is on the day prior to the Broom Clearing 17th year @ Cotter Hut organised by John T and has his OK. All participants on this walk need to be willing to join in the broom clearing the next morning. One little issue is that we need to walk from Yankee Hat car park to Rotten Swamp before we can start following Licking Hole Creek down to the Cotter. We visited this confluence on 7-8 Jun 08 and it is very pretty. Rotten Swamp is also delightful. Camp at Cotter Flats on the Friday night.

Let's say we leave town at 5am, start walking at 6.30am and reach Cotter Flats to camp around 5.30pm.

An option to consider is that we broom clear for half a day, then walk out the AAWT to Orroral. Advantage - we'd not have to get the main broom clearing party to bring in spare car seats for us. Disadvantage - we'd need to leave another car at Orroral on the way in on Friday. The walk out would be around 14.5km and would take around 5hrs.

I have a camping permit for the Cotter Flats area for Friday 13 November.

Let's limit this to 5, so we can do the car shuffle with just 2 cars. As well, we could ask the broom clearers to drive our overnight packs out if we wanted a softer option.

5 booked - MS, MB, CR and CB and me. Full.
