Getting There

This walk was organised and led by me as a private walk, to recce tomorrow's walk and to tape all border markers. Just the 2 of us.

Walk

We left Weston Creek just before 7.30am and drove from Weston Creek via Uriarra Crossing, Uriarra Road, Brindabella Road (32km and 25mins to the end of the sealed road); to Piccadilly Circus (cumulative 40km and 35mins to the junction); then Mt Franklin Road to the Mt Franklin car park (total 59.5km and 1hr 5mins). Got our gear organised and walked up to the Mt Franklin shelter, arriving 8.45am.

So my advice of 2hrs is ok - say, come from somewhere in Canberra that takes 30mins to get to Weston Creek, drive a bit slower than me (1hr 15mins), shake out and walk up (15mins) = 2hrs.

Starting from the shelter (where Matthew Higgins will give the talk), we did Walk 3 to Mt Franklin trig and the ski tow, taping R55, Q55, P55, O55, N55, M55, L55, 15 Mile, K55, J55, I55 and H55. Each tape is blue, at least 1m long, tied up in a tree or shrub, so streaming. Returned to the shelter.

Then down to the car park, taping S55 (it's a bit off the track in the bush) and T55. This is Walk 1.

Drove to Aggie Gap and wandered up the Mt Aggie Walking Track. Don't take the W loop - it's closed! Taped Y54 and X54. These are off the track in the bush around 30m. We marked the spots to leave the track with stick arrows, plus a tiny tie of blue tape. Tape streamers near the BMs. W54 is in the scrub and it's not worth returning to the track to get to it. Taped it. V54 is very near the track - taped it. Veered W off the track as soon as an open view was evident. Lovely views down to the Goodradigbee River valley from U54 and up the shale ridge (interesting geology) to T54. Excellent views from the top. Returned straight down the track. This is Walk 4. There was a NSW P&WS crew there, just about to start work on the closed W loop. The boss was Natalie M who's promised me lunch if I take her to Coree Falls - it was excellent to meet her. The crew will be working there tomorrow.

1 Fungi near Y54 2 T54

Drove to Snow Gum arboretum turn off and visited and taped B54. It's a little way up through the open bush - participants will need a GPS-equipped guide. Only takes 5mins. This is Walk 2A.

Drove further N. Taped Y53 with the engine running (this is Walk 2B).

Drove further N to the Chalet Road turn off, where the walk into Bendora Arboretum starts. Taped E53 with the engine running (this is Walk 2C).

Drove further N to Bulls Head picnic area. Parked and walked, found and taped E52, F52, G52, H52 and I52. Very pleasant up along this ridge passed the stone survival shelter. This is Walk 5.

3 Grevillea at Bulls Head

Drove to Piccadilly Circus. Taped E51 with the engine running. This is Walk 2D. Finished by 12.15pm.

Drove home.

Thanks for your company and conversation Mike.

Distance: 3.8km (at Mt Franklin) + 2.5km (at Mt Aggie) = 0.2km (near Snow Gum arboretum) + 1.5km (at Bulls Head) = 8.0km Climb: 200m. Time: 8.45am - 12.15pm (3.5hrs) including driving.
Grading: S/E; E(6).
