Getting There

This walk was organised and led by me a a CBC walk:

Sunday arvo 14 November - Dry stone walls above Glendale Crossing - S/M. Join Tim the Yowie Man on a ramble to search for his long lost second cousin Billy Bunyip. If no joy, at least we'll visit the dry stone walls. Anyone know why they were built? A beer/ice cream on the way home at the Tharwa General Store. Around 6km and 300m climb. Map: Michelago. Leader: John Evans - jevans@pcug.org.au, (h) 6288 7235. Leave town around 12.30pm. Transport: ~$8 per person.

5 of us met at Parkway and 2 more were waiting for us at Glendale.

Further Information

This is a ramble - no fast walking. But a bit of scrub, so gaiters are mandatory (snakes are waking).

Walk

Track

It stormed vigorously in the Parkway church car park as we gathered to leave. But no one (except me) was willing to call it off, so we began the wet trip to the dry walls.

It certainly wasn't the best route in. After leaving the Brandy Flat Walking Track and the lower open areas, we struck very wet scrub, particularly climbing through the 1000m contour. A little more open up on the crest of the spur. I missed the open lead at the top of the drainage line to the Boboyan Road and we came in high onto the walls through the scrub. It showered and rained intermittently.

Wet, but not cold, we snapped a few photos at the main walls and had a bite to eat.

The return leg was a little more sensible, following down the open lead, and along the top of the spur, but maybe coming off too soon again down a steep, scrubby area.

We called in for a chat With Val at the Tharwa Store.

Many thanks for your company, Tim the Yowie Man and Chris B, Marg C, Stephen and Lisa M and Phillip S.

Distance: 4.2km Climb: 250m. Time: 1.30 - 3.50pm (2hrs 20mins), with 15mins of stops.
Grading: S/M; E(7)

If Tim the Yowie Man wants to offer this walk to the public, I'd be happy to take a group there. I'd not recommend this walk for the general public to do unaccompanied, as there is no track and the scrub is a bit robust in places.

Postscript

Using tons of hyperbole (grin), Tim the Yowie Man featured this walk in his Wall of silence article in the Panorama magazine of the Canberra Times on 4 December 2010. If you want to, you can download and read the article here (jpg format, 2.8MB).
