Getting There

This walk was organised and led by Linda G as a CBC walk:

Saturday 9 July - Granite tors of the Tinderries - M/R. A mostly-offtrack walk to two unnamed granite outcrops on the eastern side of the Tinderry Range, through unburnt eucalpyt forest, which is a haven for lyrebirds. Leaving the cars at the junction of Tinderry Road and the Round Flat Fire Trail, we follow the fi re trail for about 1.5 km, cut across country and then climb about 220 m to the granite outcrop at 066461 which has large boulders and pleasant views. Then across the head of Roberts Creek and a further climb to the outcrop at 068466 which has massive boulders, even better views and a large fl at granite platform for lunch. Expect slow going, steep slopes with a lot of fallen timber, some scrub, and some unexposed scrambling on the tops. Leaving Canberra around 7:30 am. Map: Tinderry. Leader: Linda G. Transport: ~$10 per person.

8 of us met at Michelago and drove the Tinderry Road to the Round Flat Fire Trail.

Track

I was last around here on 17 May 11 and will be back to Tinderry Peak on 24 Sep 11. So this was a useful recce for me.

We went in along the Round Flat fire trail and, at the big right hand bend with sign, continued N. A bit of an old vehicle track for a while. We crossed the second non-perennial water course and bent up to the NW. An excellent route between the gully and the granite-infested crest of the ridge. Linda and Peter are living legends and sure can choose a route and navigate well. A little crawl brought us up the back of the first tor, although the top point was impossible to scale. Morning tea.

Leaving the tor, we continued NW to a spot where Linda reckoned she'd like to camp. Here, she took her sore foot and a PLB and wandered back down to the fire trail.

The rest of us swung towards the N, crossed Roberts Creek, again experienced good open climbing to the next ridge and snuck through the granite on the ridge to the next major tor (which we'd visited on 17 May 11). Lunch on the N side out of the breeze.

We left the tor, down to 1400m as previously, then a line further to the E than last time down to Roberts Creek. Some nice granite on the way down that we missed last time. Across Roberts Creek, then generally cutting the corner of its curve, across to the fire trail where Linda handed out rewards.

A tromp back to the cars.

A great couple of tors. Many thanks Linda and Peter. And thanks to Brendan, Emily, Max and Richard and Jenny.

Distance: 10.3km Climb: 400m. Time: 8.50am - 2.50pm (7hrs), with 1hr 15mins of stops.
Grading: M/R; M(11)
