Getting There

This walk was organised and led by Phillip S as a CBC walk:

Saturday 17 March - Square Rock and Smokers Trail - M/M. This is a popular walk but a new one for your leader. A track through bush from the Square Rock car park marks the beginning of this walk to a monumental group of boulders. Hopefully we have a clear day so that we can enjoy the great views. On the way back we peel off to join the Smokers Trail until we come to Smokers Trail car park. We will have vehicles at this point to take us back to Corin Road. Map: Corin Dam, Leader: Phillip S. Transport: ~$10.

14 of us met at Kambah and drove to the Square Rock/Smokers Gap car park.

Track

The Corin Road is gated off just past the Square Rock/Smokers Gap car park. Let's hope it opens soon.

A nice wander in lovely Autumn weather along the track to Square Rock. Plenty of chatter. A first little lunch at Square Rock whilst taking in the superb views.

Back along the track to the Orroral Valley Lookout turn off, where we did. This track has received recent attention, with the shrubs cut back away from the sides. Now, instead of being a narrow footpad, it's a pleasant trip in. The lookout feels as though it's been opened up and there are great views down onto the N end of the Orroral Valley. A second little lunch.

Then back to the main track, back along it to the link track to Smokers Trail where we turned right and walked over to join Smokers Trail.

This we followed to the bushwalking register just before the Smokers Trail car park. We munched again for big lunch. This part of Smokers Trail is looking good, a far cry from my visit 3 years after the 2003 firestorm, on 18 Jan 06. Booroomba Creek was flowing nicely.

The last leg took us down and across the burnt out Gibraltar Creek Pine Forest area opposite Corin Forest recreation area.

Our car stopped for a quick look at Gibraltar Falls on the way back home.

Thanks Phillip. A very pleasant and well facilitated stroll. As always, great to catch up with old friends and meet new people. CBC is a healthy club!

Distance: 14.8km Climb: 350m. Time: 9.10am - 2.00pm (4hrs 50mins), with 1hr 5mins of stops.
Grading: M/E; M(8)
