Getting There

This walk was organised and led by me as an irregular CBC walk/work party:

Saturday 11August - 12 Historic Sites at Glenburn-Burbong - S/E. Have you ever visited the 12 historic sites nearby the Burbong Bridge over the Molonglo, just east of Queanbeyan? It is a fascinating collection of sites (actually in the ACT), including stone and slab homesteads, graves, charcoal kilns and copper mines. You can download a free colour monograph on the sites from http://www.npaact.org.au/category.php?id=64. The area is maintained by a small group of very keen people, the Friends of Glenburn, along with assistance from ACT Rangers. Let's give them a hand, pay a bit forward and walk and work for the day. Blackberry lopping seems to be a high need - conservation can be historical, as well as environmental. We can even drive in! Map: Bungendore. Leader: John Evans - jevans@pcug.org.au, 0417 436 877. Transport: free for willing workers.

8 of us met at Mawson and we gathered 2 more at Queanbeyan. Drove via the Kings Highway and down Charcoal Kiln Road, then to the gate just before Colliers Homestead.

Further Information

I was last there 29 Jan 08 and 24 Mar 08.

Col and I get a brushcutter lesson at 10am Friday.

My sincere apologies to anyone who felt cheated of a walk.

I thought it best that we work first and that we did till 1.30pm. We were able to clear a huge infestation of blackberries adjacent to Colliers Homestead and nearly finished a huger one next to the orchard. Col McA, head honcho of Friends of Glenburn, seemed pleased with the results.

By down-tools time this old codger was a bit whacked, so gratefully agreed to the suggestion that we drive around some of the sites.

We drove along the River Rd and walked a few tens of metres to John Coppins Homestead site. Col and the Friends have done a mighty work here, clearing all the blackberries that totally hid the significantly large site from view, except for the top of the chimney. We then drove back to the site of the charcoal kilns on one side of the road and the Kowen Public School on the other. Col told us the history. Finally, a walk through the Glenburn Homestead pise building and slab hut. Again, a large amount of conservation work has been done.

Many, many thanks to Justin F, Eric G, Tom G, Nathan H, Phillip S, Ian W, Edwina Y, Ping Z and, of course, Col McA.

Distance: 1km Climb: <10m. Time: 8.30am - 3.00pm, including working, driving and 1km of walking to visit some of the sites.
