Walk Description

This walk was organised and led by Ian W as an irregular CBC Tuesday walk:

With high winds and showers, and the Boboyan Road closed except for 4WD vehicles, Ian opted for plan C:

Tuesday 25 June: Kowen Forest.

4 of us drove from Canberra through Queanbeyan to park on an old part of the Kings Highway.

Further Information

The walk was to be:

Tuesday 25 June: Booth Range, Bog Hut Site, Namadgi NP – L/R/ Part X. Starting at the lookout on the Boboyan Road (grid ref: 809401) we will climb to the Booth Range and cross at grid ref: 834391. The main objective is a remote sub-alpine swamp at about 1300 metres altitude where the ruins of a stockman’s hut, known as The Bog Hut, are located at grid ref: 844417. If time and scrub permit, we will also climb to the ridge 1 kilometre to the east of the hut site for a short reconnaissance. The afternoon return route will descend the range from Spot Height 1401 on a different spur to the morning’s course. Note: This will be an arduous walk, all off track, with an early start and late finish, possibly by torch-light. Minimum Distance: 15 km with approx. 950 metres of ascent. Maps: Colinton, Michelago Leader: Ian W. Limit: 8. Transport: Approx. 120 km return.

Track Notes

N from the car up to Mt Cohen, then generally W and NW to The House that Jack Built area and so to the Kowen fire tower. S to Blue Tile Picnic Area, then a fire trail bash up the N bank of the Molonglo to the big bend. Through Colliers Homestead (looking great), then around the Murryong block. A short detour to a second dam, then back S to the car.

A combination of pine forest walking - quite pleasant - and fire trails if they were going our way. A few light showers during the day, but we were sheltered from the wind in the pine forest.

It turned out to be a long walk!
