382 24 May 14 GC4XG3C Bendy Boulder A Canberra Bushwalking Club trip in the area. After we finished, I did a few more. Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC.
381 24 May 14 GC1XAJQ Ridge of Stone A Canberra Bushwalking Club trip in the area. After we finished, I did a few more. This is exactly why I started caching - to get me to different areas in NNP. I've walked up and back this footpad many times, but never bothered to go to the edge at this point before. Nice boulders and tors. Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC. A favourite from me.
380 24 May 14 GC1GE7M Lego Land II A Canberra Bushwalking Club trip in the area. After we finished, I did a few more. I must have climbed over this cache on several occasions prior to learning about geocaching. It's a nice cave. Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC.
379 24 May 14 GC21HAX 300 Spartans A Canberra Bushwalking Club trip in the area. After we finished, I did a few more. Did you know that the flat granite and large boulders approaching the cache site are an indigenous site? Recorded in JH Winston-Gregson's MA thesis at ANU in 1978. Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC.
378 24 May 14 GC168Y0 Bats in the Belfry A Canberra Bushwalking Club trip in the area. After we finished, I did a few more. A lovely tor. Wouldn't have a hope without the spoiler pics. Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC.
377 24 May 14 GC11FNJ Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station A Canberra Bushwalking Club trip in the area. After we finished, I did a few more. 1 in party. First time I've ever snapped a selfie - man, am I old looking (this is what I learned). Why can't the camera capture my inner youth? Caught up on the career of an acquaintance (also learned). I love earthcaches - no stuff left lying around in the bush. Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC.
376 24 May 14 GC168XW Namadgi Billabong A Canberra Bushwalking Club trip in the area. After we finished, I did a few more. I'd sat on my glasses, so had difficulty reading the cache description. That led to a first attempt counting concrete and new flexible posts. A recount produced the correct result and it was back up to grab the cache. Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC.
375 24 May 14 GC168XY Honeysuckle Dreaming A Canberra Bushwalking Club ramble to The Spinnaker. When we arrived I threw my pack down and spent 20mins looking for this. Giving up, I returned for a morning tea cuppa - to find the cache inches away from my pack. DOH! Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC.
374 24 May 14 GC26965 Exploring History - Honeysuckle Creek A Canberra Bushwalking Club ramble to The Spinnaker. I raced out and had time to grab this one before the walk started. Trip report at http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=3215 .TFTC.
373 20 May 14 GC1KM69 Nursery Creek A Canberra Bushwalking Club Tuesday walk to Mt Mavis. Searched last Saturday with no joy. Searched on the way in today with no joy. That Doh! moment when, on our way home, I found it. Trip report at www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=2992 with photos and a video. As others report, log too wet to sign, so I took a photo. The cache container is cracking. TTC.
372 20 May 14 GC17BGN A Mountain Somewhere An ambitious Canberra Bushwalking Club trip to Mt Mavis (local club name for SH1711 above Rendezvous Creek). Stupendous views. I wanted to take one of the very life-like little snakes, but had no swaps. Trip report at www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=2992 with photos and a video. TTC.
371 18 May 14 GC39857 A Mountain for mtbikeroz A Canberra Bushwalking Club trip from Nursery Swamp car park over towards Little Creamy Flats. A couple of caches on the Nursery Swamp Walking Track to get my eye in. Nice views from GC39857 A Mountain for mtbikeroz. Trip report at www.johnevans.id.au/wp/?p=2989 . TFTC.

368 10 May 14 GC1ZK7X 20 Good Reasons Is this heaven? A walk to Cotter Gap with 8 gorgeous gals + 2 geocaches. But, boy, can they talk! TFTC.
367 10 May 14 GC2EZ5Y Vilya
366 19 Apr 14 GC2BG7Q Bushfold View The perfect combo. A Canberra Bushwalking Club walk led by someone else who was happy to visit this cache; 8 muggles to find it (although not necessary); a lovely Easter Saturday day. Trip report at www.johnevans.id.au/Pages/Walk%20Descriptions/2014_04_19.html . TFTC.
365 17 Apr 14 GC1BV5W Time and Space Out at Orroral Homestead doing a KHA hut inspection (I'm just the tea boy), so we visited a couple of caches in the area. Muggle son from the USA was with me. TFTC.
364 17 Apr 14 GC1AF2A Moon Mirrors
363 17 Apr 14 GC1HWPD Personal Best
362 17 Apr 14 GC16AEV Orroral Run
361 12 Apr 14 GC48VC9 Planets 5 - Saturn With a house full of women at daughter's baby shower, what better opportunity for son-in-law and me to do a couple of hours caching on the flanks of Mt Ainslie. Nice autumn afternoon between wet days on the vivid green grassy slopes. TFTC.
360 12 Apr 14 GC48VBG Planets 4 - Mars
359 12 Apr 14 GC48VAT Planets 3 - Venus
358 12 Apr 14 GC48VFV Planets 12 - Earth
357 5 Apr 14 GC44K5T Powerful Pumps We were on a Canberra Bushwalking Club geocaching walk (see http://www.johnevans.id.au/Pages/Walk%20Descriptions/2014_04_05.html) on a damp morning. TFTC.
356 5 Apr 14 GC4EPZR Charlie's Lookout A great opportunity, even though it was drizzling, to have a look at the dam (excuse my French) wall and solve this multi. We were on a Canberra Bushwalking Club geocaching walk (see http://www.johnevans.id.au/Pages/Walk%20Descriptions/2014_04_05.html) on a damp morning. TFTC.
355 5 Apr 14 GC46Y8E Another Dam Puzzle! Had solved the wordfind puzzle and took the opportunity to log this one on a Canberra Bushwalking Club geocaching walk (see http://www.johnevans.id.au/Pages/Walk%20Descriptions/2014_04_05.html) on a damp morning. TFTC.
354 5 Apr 14 CG1GTAA Bibliomania Found whilst doing the Queen series on a Canberra Bushwalking Club walk (see http://www.johnevans.id.au/Pages/Walk%20Descriptions/2014_04_05.html) on a damp morning. Got the result of the book puzzle easily enough, but needed a hint from Mr_roo for the final step. TFTC.
353 5 Apr 14 GC4MB7P 19 Queen: The Show Must Go On Now I was well prepared as I'd done my homework. For the 20 geocaches in the Queen series, I had the appropriate song on my phone for us to listen to as we walked through the drizzle to the location. And I must say that I've found the ideal way to geocache - a Canberra Bushwalking Club walk led by me (see http://www.johnevans.id.au/Pages/Walk%20Descriptions/2014_04_05.html) and advertised as a caching walk; party members with varying degrees of keenness (but many sets of eyes helps); Kittykatch (aka Kath H) to lead the charge; and Mr_roo (aka Jeff P) to keep an eye on us. All I had to do was trail along at the end and, by the time we reached the next cache, I'd been logged in and it was time to move on. Perfecto! TFTC.

344 5 Apr 14 GC4MAT6 11 Queen: Don't Stop Me Now Now I was well prepared as I'd done my homework. Perfecto! But a couple of problems here. Two raging streams. The first we crossed upstream from the ford, only to be confronted by the second. Scouted it for a while but no joy. Returned to the ford and I was the only person silly enough to stick across the ford. TFTC.
343 5 Apr 14 GC4M94F 10 Queen: You're My Best Friend Now I was well prepared as I'd done my homework. For the 20 geocaches in the Queen series, I had the appropriate song on my phone for us to listen to as we walked through the drizzle to the location. A great series! So well put together and it encourages a great walk. A huge investment by the CO for our enjoyment.

#6 - spent a bit of time on this one, but finally made good.
#13 - very good! Which was sized for which? In July 2008 I was wandering up the Mt Tennent Fire Trail and found them digging in a power cable under the road, all the way to the top. So this one aptly named. A favourite from me.

208 21 Feb 14 GC2P2H1 Love 'em or Hate 'em Revisited
Pre-history: I've see a few geocaches in my time. One, very early on, was at New Fishloch Yards in the Orroral Valley. Another cache in very poor nick on the eucalyptus still near Nil Desperandum and a third at the border marker at the East most point of the ACT. On 8 Dec 13, Kath H walked with me in a party to Red Rocks Gorge and found a cache just behind where we stopped for a swim. I ran into Kath again on 2 Jan 14 - on this trip I saw Kath and friend find one cache, she pointed out a second and helped me discover a third.
After having a look around www.geocaching.com - in particular seeing all the caches in NNP - I'm hooked. So I created an account as JohnnyBoyACT, looked up a nearby cache on Narrabundah Hill to try and away I went.
1 6 Jan 14 GC37XWR A Partridge in a Pear Tree Being an inveterate list ticker (and only having a few hundred ACT border markers left to visit), I think I'll include geocaching in my bushwalking trips from now on. 2 10 Jan 14 GC1YFHD Twisted Ton What to do whilst the shopping melts in the car. Ran into my mate Wayne P and friend cycling back from the Cotter and Mt Stromlo.   11 Jan 14 GC184R1 Orroral Overview Missed it - not found. Had 7 muggles on a bushwalk with McKeahnie trig and Square Rock to do, so unfortunately that took precedence. I'll be back ...
6 11 Jan 14 GC22FTP McKeahnie Minor Some of my bushwalking mates scoff at geocaching, but this one got me the closest I've been to the trig - never been round to the GZ side before. Had 7 muggles with me, but I found the cache by myself. A bit of a burn on the north side of the hill made the last 100m of the approach easier, but the rest is pea regrowth. If you keep to the NW side of the crest of the ridge, it's a fraction clearer. Trip report at (visit link) . TFTC.
7 11 Jan 14 GCWCQF Square Stone After a No Find of Orroral Overview, then a bush bash to Find McKeahnie Minor, a pleasure to get back on the track to Square Rock. Still 7 muggles + me in the party but, again, I found this one myself. Trip report at (visit link) . TFTC.

24 14 Jan 14 GC2042F Wonderland #1 - Rabbit Ear Rocks I learned today that you can't be a bushwalker (with other goals) and a Namadgi geocacher at the same time. 40 23 Jan 14 GC2BHC7 How Green is my.....Fence? Geo-newbies take note: I got a caning from a Canberra geo-living legend concerning my recent logs. I thought there was plenty of variety in them ('TFTC' or 'Tftc'), but apparently COs like tales of our hardships and stresses as we visit their hides. So ... what to do instead of sitting in the waiting room with (non)geo-wife at the Doctor's? Pull out the geo-iPhone and see what's out there. Just a few hundred metres away and there and back before wife had even gone in. Choices, choices for this one. 44 23 Jan 14 GC1R349 Brown Hill Now this one has a REAL story. Was on a CBC evening stroll 4 days ago with pre-geo bonek. Found a couple of caches. 46 26 Jan 14 GC3Q0GK 15th of 50 Must See Places - SWISS ALPS A couple of hours on Australia Day afternoon was the perfect time for a trip 1/3 of the way around the world. - Seems like geocaching is as serious as border marker hunting. I received a second geo-etiquette caning:
I see you recently 'found' my Lake Loft cache! (although you didn't sign the log)... However - seeing you are still new to this activity - I'll accept the find on this occasion :-) For future reference, part of geocaching etiquette is that if you didn't "sign" the logsheet, you didn't "find" it. That's because there are a fair few caches out there, that are easy to find, but the challenge is getting to it, or indeed, simply "opening" it in some caches (there are some wonderful puzzle boxes out there). Anyways, all good, and I hope you are enjoying geocaching! - I've certainly enjoyed some of your online bushwalking write ups! I was also very interested in your weir hunting! Starting in 2010, I had been hunting those weirs also - and planting caches near them :-) . And it seems, that you have found a couple that I hadn't found yet! So I may have to check those out to complete the series!
Thank goodness I have some blog cred ;-)

86 1 Feb 14 GC1YK3R Where in the World is Basil?

Solved the bushwalking-geocaching dilema. Put on a walk myself and make the primary objective caching. Pleased to log this, it was a good puzzle.

The description and previous logs hint at an ascent. If this is the case, let me tell you a gospel-true story. I was at the opening of the enhanced track up to Stockyard Spur. One of the speakers described the initial stone steps at the bottom of the track as representing the 4 rises and flats on the track to the helipad. Only trouble is, is that the ratio of risers to treads in the 4 steps don't quite represent the enormous climbs and short flats of the track. How far up will you have to go to find Basil?

Gets a favourite from me. TFTC.

Hats off to Agent Basil and his fellow RFS volunteers. And special thanks to him for peeing on that smoldering log.

Can I add a little something to the description? As the sign on the door indicates, it was built for personnel tending the alpine annexe of the National Botanic Gardens, not the adjacent Scotts Pine arboretum. The alpine annexe site is centred around S 35° 34.3614' E 148° 46.9428' (GDA94), about 130m up the gully from where the Mt Gingera footpad leaves the Mt Franklin Rd. I started walking after the 2003 fires and the only evidence I can find is perhaps some benched tracks on the high side of the site.

Solved the bushwalking-geocaching dilema. Put on a walk myself and make the primary objective caching. After puffing up from Corin Dam we met another Canberra Bushwalking Club party which included mr_roo. With a little direction from him, I logged it too. TFTC.

89 1 Feb 14 GC2ABD A Long Way To The Top

Solved the bushwalking-geocaching dilema. Put on a walk myself and make the primary objective caching. After puffing up from Corin Dam we met another Canberra Bushwalking Club party which included mr_roo.

The story of Gingera is that many folk think that the guyed pole at S 35° 34.6350' E 148° 46.8204' (GDA 94) is Mt Gingera. It certainly boasts the best view and has a nearby tenacious Snow Gum clinging to the granite. I've seen maps marked 'NatMap Gingera'. However, if you look up the crest of the ridge to the NW, you'll see that the trees are higher. About 110m in that direction you'll come across some high granite rocks. It's here that Harry Mouat, the early 1900s surveyor of this part of the ACT border, took a 1" gaspipe and drove it into a cleft of a boulder to mark this border point. I look for it every time I come here (being a more tragic border marker hunter than a geocaching tragic - one day I'll bring a metal detector!).

In the company of mr_roo and 3 others, we wandered a bit further to the NW along the crest and looked for the cache. Thanks to mr_roo, he not only found the cache but did the pen work for me. Now that's service. Never seen so many Bogong moths before! TFTC.

- 1 Feb 14 GCHCWT Corin's Core Spent 15mins looking. I see from the previous logs that this one is not easy I'll be back.
90 4 Feb 14 GC233AR Corang cascades Up at 5.15am for a Canberra Bushwalking Club Tuesday walk from Wog Wog to Corang Peak, Corang Arch, Canowie Brook, Many Rock Ribs, Corang Lagoon and back via Goodsell Creek. Checked the geo-map and low and behold, there in the emptiness was Corang cascades. Great trip, easy find. The cache needs maintenance - the top of the container has been sun-dried and has fractured to pieces. Sorry, I had nothing with me, not even a geo-pencil which was back at the lagoon campsite. Hopefully the pic will do. Left the cache upside down to give it as much protection as possible. Trip report at www.johnevans.id.au/Pages/Walk%20Descriptions/2014_02_04.html. TFTC.
91 5 Feb 14 GCJ377 Commonwealth Creek Getting the hang of this. Put on a Canberra Bushwalking Club little ride around LBG. Arrived early, checked the Geocaching app and rode from the meet point at Regatta Point down into Commonwealth Park for a little bag. TFTC.
92 7 Feb 14 GC3Q0GZ 20th of 50 Must See Places - ROME Out early on the bike to finish the 50 Must See Places. Started on 23 Jan, so around the world in 16 days, not 80. At about #24 - Gallipoli, I spied someone lurking behind a pine tree. It was none other than Mamaduke Rothschild (aka another Canberra Bushwalking Club member who has been won over to the dark side of geocaching). We combined well till I reached my finish point. But I'm sure I got back to my car quicker than he would've. TFTC and TFTS, Sol de lune. I appreciate all the effort and $ you've put in for my enjoyment - especially the colour coordinated caches with matching pen and log book. This series gets a favourite from me, at #1.
