Coornartha NR | Cypress Pines | old bottle | trig | open going | eagles’ nest
Tuesday 25 March: Plan C Coornartha Nature Reserve – L/M,X. A ramble around the Coornartha Nature Reserve near Numeralla. Maps: Numeralla and Cooma. Leader: Linda G. Transport: $100 per car.

8 of us drove from Canberra via Cooma and Numeralla.

Further Information

Due to rain, today’s walk was changed from Upper Buckenbowra River to Kybeyan River and Mt Pleasant. Linda will now lead Upper Buckenbowra River on Thursday 3 Apr 14.

Due to Kybeyan NR closure for feral animal control, plan C was adopted. At our start point for plan C, a phone call resulted in plan B being available, as it was too wet and cloudy for helicopters. But we wanted to walk, not drive.

Summary

Distance: 15.7km | Climb: 450m | Time: 9.35am-3.20pm (5hrs 45mins), with 50 mins of breaks | Grading: L/M; M(9)

Track Notes

Our esteemed leader has mighty big sleeves – with a myriad of walks up them. On a wet day, we’d driven past the entrance to the Coornartha NR on our way to the Kybeyan NR. KNR was plan B. However, with the area closed, we drove back to the Coornartha Nature Reserve and Linda quickly hatched plan C.

A nice ramble on a drizzly morning through open Cypress Pine and eucalypt woodlands. Thin, dry soil on the ridges and some nice deep (but dry) drainage lines. It stopped raining at lunch time.

Some interesting moments – Peter found a most elegant old bottle and David, noticing the bird droppings in the creek line, lifted our gaze to an incredible eagles’ nest high in a dead tree. Throw in a trig and great company in a new area, with someone else driving, to make a most enjoyable day.

Party

8 walkers – Peter C, Philip and Jan G, Eric G, Linda G (leader), David P, Ian W, me.
