Bumps on the 1210+m feature south of lunch

Tuesday 11 November: Northern Section of Tallaganda National Park – L/R/X. The walk starts at the junction of the Forbes Creek road and North Black Range fire trail. The walk is mainly off-track in the northern section of Tallaganda National Park. We will visit South Black Range Trig, then take a long meandering route northeast then southwest, through forests, swamps and undulating ridge country back to the cars. This is a long exploratory trip for strong walkers and it could be difficult going in places. Minimum distance: 18 km with ∼600 metres of ascent. Map: Bombay. Leader: Ian W. Transport: 106 km return. Limit: 8.

7 of us drove in 2 cars to park at the junction of Forbes Creek Rd and North Black Range Fire Trail.

Track Notes

A very pleasant day. We inserted 3km in 45mins up along the North Black Range Fire Trail, then wandered up past an egg shaped boulder, to visit South Black Range trig.

A great site, somewhat akin to McKeahnie trig, the stone trig base set high atop a huge boulder. An old ladder lay nearby – perhaps via it to a tree branch to get up,but we certainly didn’t try.

Then a large loop around the private property block in this part of the National Park. Not many geological features of note, but pleasant walking. Lots of wildflowers, particularly Donkey orchids and Early Nancies.

Ian, who researches his walks very well, was able to tell us that the swampy ares we passed through feature in the Park’s management plan as quite rare high altitude montaine swamps.

Soon after arvo tea we joined an old vehicle (logging?) track not marked on the map, which took us back to the main fire trail.

Party

7 walkers – Chris F, Eric G, Linda G, Stewart J, David P, Ian W (leader), me.

Next Tuesday Walk

Tuesday 18 November: Hospital Creek and around with Matthew Higgins – M/M. Starting from Yankee Hat Carpark, walking via track and bush to the beautiful little waterfall on Hospital Creek. Then follow the creek upstream to Hospital Creek Hut for morning tea. Perhaps a look at the granite a few hundred metres south of the hut. Return via Frank and Jack’s Hut with a lunch stop on one of the small hills just west of the hut. Return to cars through the Gudgenby regeneration grounds. Map: Yaouk. Leader: John Evans 0417 436 877 john@johnevans.id.au (with contracted assistance from Matthew Higgins). Transport: $12. Book by 2pm the prior Sunday.
