Getting There

This walk was organised as a Wednesday walk by the combined CBC/FBI/NPA clubs, led by Allan M:

('The walk this Wednesday will be in the Blundells Creek area to the south-east of Picadilly Circus. Distance is about 11 km on fire trails and tracks with a few small well graded climbs totalling about 350 metres. The area was burnt in the January 2003 fires but the tree ferns seemed to be recovering well last time I was in that part of the Brindabellas. Maps: Cotter Dam 1:25000 and a very small part on Tidbinbilla 1:25000.').

19 of us walked.  We met at Cooleman Court at 8.30am and drove via Uriarra Crossing to Reids Pinch on the Brindabella Road, about 3 km short of Piccadilly Circus.  We left a car in the open area on the left, immediately before the Namadgi National Park sign. We then drove on a further about 1.5 km to where Old Mill Road leaves Brindabella Road on the left.  There was room on the opposite side of the road to park the 4 cars.

Walk

The walk started at the intersection of Brindabella Road and Old Mill Road.  We followed Old Mill Road as it contoured around to the south-east of Piccadilly Circus.  A stop along the way for morning tea.

At around GR658835 (GDA94) we headed bush in a north-east direction down a steep-ish spur.  It was easy enough walking down the shale covered ground, still suffering from the Jan 03 bushfires.  Strangely, we passed quite a number of star pickets - someone suggested marking some research project.  There were good views to the east to the western side of the Tidbinbilla ridge line with my favourite peaks easily identified.

Our spur came out onto Warks Road, which we followed till we turned left onto Blundells Creek Road.  We stopped in the shade on the road for lunch.

Blundells Creek Road took us back up to Bridabella Road at Reids Pinch, with views to the southern end of Mt Coree.

A very nice wander with water flowing in the streams and tree ferns growing in the damp areas, although a lot of weed establishing in the water courses.  Probably 5 degrees cooler than the hot mid 30s day down in Canberra.

Distance: 12.1km  Time: 10am-2pm, with 45 minutes of stops.
