Track Notes

Walk 1 - Big Monks, Rose and Gigerline trigs

We put 2 cars down at the Tharwa bridge then set off up the very steep but tarred road/track S towards Big Monks. It turned to dirt around the top of the major climb and soon after we headed off-track on a direct line to the trig. An iconic little spot. Went over to 'Little Monks'.

Then a wander via fire trails to Rose trig. The wind made it cool. Time for morning tea.

Next, off-track across rolling grazing country to Gigerline trig.

Then down to near the Murrumbidgee River opposite the de Salis cemetery. This site looks great after restoration. A little further on we crossed the fence parallel to the river to get away from the cow pats and had lunch. Roger turned out to be the claimant of the 30th birthday and drew a bottle of celebratory beverage from his pack and distributed it into 9 plastic cups.

After lunch we walked to the cars near the Tharwa bridge.

13.7km, 595m climb, 8.30am - 1.20pm comprising 4hrs of walking + 50mins of breaks.

Walk 2 - Tharwa trig

We drove through Tharwa to park outside the entrance to Outward Bound.

A stile over the fence line opposite, then a footpad of sorts up the hill and over the crest to Tharwa trig. Engineer Eric, always the one to notice interesting things, noticed that the bolts at the bottom of the three trig legs were numbered 1, 2 and 3! Why? And was bolt 1 in leg 1 and so on. Returned to the cars.

0.7km, 50m climb, 1.25 - 1.45pm comprising 20mins of walking.

Walk 3 - Lanyon trig

We next drove into the SW corner of Gordon and parked beside a little park area in Chipperfield Cct.

A walk up the gentle spur to Lanyon trig. Nice views W to the Murrumbidgee River and beyond. Nice little knolls to return over.

2.1km, 125m climb, 1.50 - 2.25pm comprising 35mins of walking.

Walk 4 - Melrose trig

Drove back to the top of Banks to pick up all the cars, then across to the Monaro Highway and the entrance to the Tuggeranong Pine Forest at Old Tuggeranong Rd.

A wander along the road, then off-track to Melrose trig. Again, nice views. Returned to the cars.

2.3km, 100m climb, 2.50 - 3.30pm comprising 40mins of walking.

A 6-trig bag for the day!

Distance: 18.8km Climb: 870m. Time: 8.30am - 3.30pm (7hrs), comprising 5hrs 35mins of walking + 50mins of breaks and the rest driving.
