19 September 2013 Navigation Refresher #7: GPSr and PC

Walk Description

This event was organised and led by me as part of the CBC Navigation Course:

Thursday 19 September: Navigation Refresher #7: GPSr and PC. An evening looking at interfacing GPSr to PC. Use of digital mapping software (eg. OziExplorer, Garmin's BaseCamp) and maps (eg. NSW LPI TopoView digitised 1:25000 topo maps for PC, OZTopo vector maps for GPS) to plan, record and analyse trips. We'll also look at Google Earth and other software. Bookings to: John Evans - john@johnevans.id.au, 0417 436 877. Transport: Drive yourself to UTM 55H 685271-6088292 (MGA94). Bring a little supper to share.

Further Information

This session is part of CBC's Navigation Refresher series run by Rob and Jenny H. Ideally, you should have completed sessions 1-6. Session #7 won't make much sense to you unless you've done sessions 5 and 6, or are familiar with the use of your GPSr. However, everyone is welcome.

Useful pre-reading is:

1 Finding Your Way in the Bush - How to navigate and plan bushwalks by George Carter, CBC, 2007. This book is available for purchase from the Canberra Bushwalking Club here.

2 GeoScience Australia's free download of Map Reading Guide - How to use Topographic Maps. This is really excellent. Print it and read it!

3 My Map Reading and Navigation page

4 My Armchair Bushwalking page.
