• “Calvary HS, also known at Mount View and Mount Calvary, was built by, or for, an Irishman, Michael Maloney, born about 1851, who arrived in Australia with his wife, Susan, as an assisted migrant in 1877. Maloney quickly obtained employment at Cuppacumbalong near Tharwa before settling at Paddys River. Michael Maloney was living at Calvary before his death in Queanbeyan in 1915, the Commonwealth resuming his land in the following year. The house, consisted of a single, L-shaped room had pisé walls roughly finished on the outside and papered within, a pisé chimney, a hardwood floor and an iron roof. A separate kitchen had an earthen floor, slab walls and a bark roof. There was a large shed on the site and Michael Maloney planted an orchard, ornamental and shade trees, grape vines and a vegetable garden. Two permanent springs provided water for the homestead and the cultivated area. The exact date of construction is unclear. One source suggests that the group of buildings was complete by 1903 and that the slab kitchen may have been built as early as 1896.” (Source: Mike S 19 Sep 08)
